I bought this vise to replace one of the generic cheap 6 in cross slide vises that seem to be the same one offered by many different vendors, including Harbor Freight, in the $60-90 price range. This is definitely a much higher quality vise than those worthless pieces of garbage. True, this Palmgren isn't a cross-slide vise, but after wasting money on one of those cheap hunks of scrap metal, I decided to buy a higher quality basic vise and design and build my own cross-slide base to mount it on, using structural aluminum for most of it to keep the weight under control. Weight is an issue because I have very little shop space for my drill press so I have a relatively small Delta, halfway between floor and bench size. Even with the junk vise weighing in at about a relatively low 35 pounds, with it mounted on the drill press table, the table is difficult to raise. If weight weren't an issue I would just buy the Palmgren 6 in cross slide vise also sold by Amazon, but that weighs a hefty 64 pounds. I don't think I could get my table raised with that on it unless I had a jack under it. By the way, my custom cross-slide base isn't done yet, I have the design in Autodesk Inventor, but some details need to be finalized and for now it's a low priority project.Back to the Palmgren vise, it's machined well, the jaw moves smoothly and it has a good solid feel to it. The horizontal and vertical alignment grooves on the jaw insert are a very nice feature that is lacking on other cheap vises like that 6 inch 35 pound door stop I regret having bought. Before that, I used a 3 in Palmgren vise for everything, one of their pricey made-in-USA models. The quality of that one is fantastic, extremely smooth operation, light weight and rugged, no doubt it will out live me, but it was just too small for many of my projects. This 6 inch Palmgren isn't the high end like the 3 inch one, but it's very good and suits my purposes perfectly, and for the price it's probably the best available. And it's so far ahead of the generic trash that's out there, I don't think I can even make a valid comparison.
