Charlotte is a very nice person. Most people think she is naive. Five days before her wedding, her fiance ended their relationship. Charlotte believed he was a perfect guy. Turns out he wasn't.When her step – sister chooses to take a month at a convent where no electronics are allowed, Charlotte is shocked. Jocelyn has always been a very high tech kind of person. Then there is a murder. A strange note is sent to Jocelyn. And Charlotte meets a private investigator who has been hired to investigate the murder. Max is not certain what has happened, but he is certain things are not as they appear. Max and Charlotte become a team. They work well together. They both consider themselves “one foot in front of the other” kind of people. No spontaneous activities within them, just plodding along by both of them. But, in reality that is not exactly accurate. Each of them have a good sense of humor as well as an understanding of human beings. They are both very intelligent. Both of them remain calm in a very dangerous and volatile situation. Most of all, they trust and rely on one another. As the investigation moves forward, there are more and more questions with what appears to be fewer and fewer answers.Everything points to the past. There is a murderer who is completely without a conscience. That murderer also seems to enjoy taking a life.Character development is complete. The reader gets to know Charlotte and Max quite well. At the same time, the secondary characters become more than background. Each of them, even the villains, add a great deal to the texture of the plot. There is a romance. Charlotte and Max learn about one another and as they do, theiradmiration for one another grows. The suspense and romance are very well written. That is just what I would expect from Ms Krentz. This is the first in a series. The reader is provided a foundation for future stories.I enjoyed the book very much. I am a fan of Ms Krentz and this is a prime example of why.
